Custom action figure artist Matt Brookins, who is producing an ICCC 2021 Exclusive Boba Fett action figure based on the original Kenner prototype designs, discusses how this exclusive figure will be built:

“While I really prefer the feel of actual vintage parts for each individual custom, it really and truly is not possible when you are doing more than a few instances of the same figure. It just takes too long. Some form of replication is needed. So I mold and cast.

“The Kenner way of building figures has the torso in two parts that fit together, and the other five parts go into that torso, secured in place once the torso is assembled. While that might be great for steel molds at a factory, I find that it is a bit more tedious doing everything by hand this way (for me at least).

“So I do the torso in one piece, and use the “Glyos” peg system. This allows you to pop in and out the different pieces from each other. That’s convenient! I find it is it without its disadvantages though. It is “expensive” to get Glyos pegs, and they wear out as you use them in the casting process. Also, the joints on the final pieces are not always consistent from figure to figure (as the molds and donor pegs wear down, especially).

“I cast with a resin called Flex-It 90. Some other customizers turned me into it a couple of years ago. It feels more like the vintage figures to me than many “traditional” casting resins. It is semi-flexible.”
